I replied privately to Marc on this earlier, so as way of following up,
here's what happened. 

Marc ssh'd to my laptop and had a look. It seems there was a small bug
in the inf parsing in the code. Marc made changes to the config and
generally messed with stuff (I'm sure he can follow up with more detail
if necessary), and it also seems that this card doesn't pick up on AP's
with no ESSID.

In the end of the day, my WLAN is now working, and I'm happy. Thanks to
all the folks at linuxant for a great technology, and to Marc in
particular for his help with my issues from the start.
