Greetings,

I was having the same problem as you...not able to find cuaHCFO or 
dev/ttySHCFOor when
when they would appear, they wouldn't stay.

Well, Bertrik Sikken's solution here:

has worked for me, and I now have a dev/modem to dev/ttySHCFO link that 
seems to
be sticking around, and my modem is connecting consistently.
