[hcflinux] No dialtone or DTMF signals heard not matter what I do

Dear Marc (or whoever wrote the driver):
My only complaint about the generic driver that I installed yesterday is
the fact that I can't hear a dialtone or the numbers being dialed no
matter what I do; I tried adjusting the volume both through kppp and at
the command line (i.e. kppp's mini-terminal window) using the ATLxMx&W
command. According to the documentation supplied, there are supposed to
be four volume levels for the speaker:
* L0 (OFF)
* L1 (LOW)
* L2 (MED)
* L3 (HIGH)
In addition, there are supposed to be four control modes for the speaker:
* M0 (OFF)
* M1 (ON UNTIL CONNECT)
* M2 (ALWAYS ON)
* M3 (ON WHEN ANSWERING ONLY)
I tried using all Lx commands except "L0" (I used each with the "M1"
command.); when dialing I hear nothing at all levels tested, although I
do hear the handshaking signals at a very low volume as my modem
connects to my ISP's modem (They sound the same at all levels tested.).
It seems that the "M1" command is functioning correctly because I hear
nothing out of my modem's speaker after it connects.
Perhaps there is an error in the driver; it is probably supposed to do
something that affects the volume after receiving an Lx command, but
doesn't. Is it not true that an HCF driver is supposed to emulate an
absent controller? Is it not also true that it is the controller within
a true hardware modem that sets the speaker volume upon receiving and Lx
command? It is definitely not a problem with the modem itself because I
still hear the Call Progression Tones at their normal volumes from
within Windows.
Although it is not a serious problem, it would be nice to have this
fixed in order to prove to the world that HCF modems can be made to
function as well from within Linux as they do from within Windows.
Thanks for helping to dispel the myth to Windows users that Linux is
inferior.
Salut!,
Karl
