[hcflinux] hcfpciosspec.o will taint the kernel

Hi Justin, "urpmi" in Mdk 9.0 apparently now does a check to verify gpg
signatures before installing anything. I didn't have any problem with the
HCF modem driver, but I get bad signature warnings sometime when installing
non-Mandrake packages. As far as I can determine, one should be safe with
packages from a reputable source. I never experienced these warnings w/Mdk
8.2, so it is an added feature of "urpmi" in Mdk 9.0 it would seem.
The "tainted kernel" may refer to a non-Mdk gpg sig. module install?
Also, sometimes you have to manually create the /dev/modem link to
/dev/ttySHCF0 with the command: ln -s /dev/ttySHCFO /dev/modem
You may have to delete a bogus /dev/modem link first if one exists. I have
encountered this on some of my installs.
Hope this may help some. All the best to you! :-)

Subject: [hcflinux] hcfpciosspec.o will taint the kernel

Hello there,
This is a new one. I just upgraded from Mandrake 8.2 to 9.0, after having
much success in easilly installing my HCF modem under 8.2 and using it with
no problem, this time installation isnt so easy.
Everything 'pretends' to install, but actually doesnt, I discovered that the
/dev/ttySHC0 doesnt exist. So curious about this I checked the FAQ and saw
that this may be common on devfs systems like Mandrake, and I should run
'modprobe hcfpciserial'. Doing so revealed something quite interesting,
apparently hcfpciosspec.o will taint the kernel!!
The error I got was:
Warning: loading
/usr/lib/hcfpci/modules/binaries/i586/Mandrake/linux-2.4.19-16mdk/hcfpciosspec.o
will taint the kernel: non-GPL license - Copyright (C) 1996-2002 Conexant
Systems Inc. All Rights Reserved.
See http://www.tux.org/lkml/#export-tainted for information about tainted
modules
I checked it out, and it said that the drivers may not be signed correctly
to be added to a precompiled binary such as Mandrake Kernel. I tried
compiling my own with Kernel version 2.5.9 but thats more hassle than
anything.
Any one else had the problem, or got ideas?
- Justin
