[hcflinux] G3 600 iBook modem - NO DIALTONE/alarm/weird current.inf stuff

Howdy...

I followed another thread which sounded a lot like my problem, but the
solution didn't work for me unfortunately!Basically, I'm getting NO DIALTONE every time I try to dial (using pon or
minicom, etc).  If I send an ATX3 or ATX1, the NO DIALTONE goes away, and
is replaced by a long delay, then an 'alarm' and a fail in syslog.I have a G3 600mhz ibook running 2.4.20-ben6 and the latest hcfusb driver.
One thing I noticed was that hcfusbconfig -info returned a parse error,
then "" for country and 0000 (repeated about 20 times with newlines) for
the country id.  I had a look in /etc/hcfusb/current.inf and discovered a
right mess at the end, which looked something like (from memory):
[Country]
HKR,Country,Current,1, 0,0
HKR,Country,Previous,1, 0,0
HKR,Country,OEM,PoundUD,1, 0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,(about 200 more '0,'s)
[Country]
HKR,Country,Current,1, 0,0
HKR,Country,Previous,1, 0,0

When I actually looked at it the first time, there were many copies of the
first [Country] set... So I deleted them all, replaced them with
[Country]
HKR,Country,Current,1, 00,09

(i.e. Australia, where I'm based)
hcfusbconfig -info then returned the right info.
Upon pon'ning again, I checked the file once more and realised it'd been
rewritten with the former junk.
Not sure if that's related to my problem, but it's interesting enough =)

Anyone had any similar experiences?  Any ideas? =)
