Hrmm, yeah, some ISPs (e.g. iTel) will use automatic assignment of these
settings, and this does work most of the time, but there are instances
when it won't. As far as the DNS settings themselves, there are usually
2 fields, Primary DNS Server and Secondary DNS Server (this is usual
practice across most platforms, sometimes there's even a Tertiary DNS
server).

If in doubt, contact your ISPs helpdesk, they should be able to assist
you here. The DNS server settings will be an IP number (e.g. like ours,
202.47.55.78).

Not good, not good at all. You might be lacking some packages, in
particular, iputils. This package hides on Red Hat Linux Disc 1, in
/RedHat/RPMS/iputils-20020124-8.i386.rpm. Mount your CD and install the
package (you'll need to be root), to do this (assuming you haven't
changed the default mountpoints):

# mount /mnt/cdrom
# rpm -ivh /mnt/cdrom/RedHat/RPMS/iputils-20020124-8.i386.rpm
# umount /mnt/cdrom

Also, double check that programs such as /bin/ping, /sbin/route,
/sbin/ifconfig, etc, actually exist.
