I also have the same problem and I am using the exact same distribution:

   - Gentoo Linux with the 2.4.19 kernels with -ac patches

An 'lsmod' looks like this:

hsfserial              17088   1  (initializing)
hsfengine             879212   0  [hsfserial]
hsfosspec              20568   0  [hsfserial hsfengine]

where 'hsfserial' has clearly died on initialisation.
