Thanks to all who helped.  My Sony VAIO (Conexant-Ambit Soft56K data/fax 
modem) running Mandrake 8.2 was freezing as it dialed.  It appears that 
it was caused by the 'wait for dial-tone' command in KPPP dialer.  This 
perhaps is caused by the unique dial tone in the house phone system 
where I live and the system where I work.  In any case unchecking that 
box seems to have solved the problem.
