[hsflinux] All seems to be OK but nothing goes out to phone line!

On a Fujitsu-Siemens C 1020 laptop, running Mandrake 9.1, I
have installed the appropriate driver
(hsflinmodem-5.03.27lnxtbeta03042700) for the Conexant
internal modem.
Everything appears to be OK, the proper modules are loaded,
the proper /dev are created, and if I try manual commands, I
get the right answers from modem device. If I call the
telephone number from outside, I get RING messages, as expected.
But when I try to dial the ISP telephone number I get after
a long wait a NO CARRIER message. By using a telephone
receiver in parallel with the line, I notice that no dial
tones are sent to phone line. I tried to fool the modem, by
manually dialling the number, but also in that case I hear
the modem tones from the remote, but nothing comes out from
local modem.
Useless to say that under Windows (God confound them!) it
works, and if I carry the same test, I can hear dial tones
not only from PC speaker, but also from a telephone receiver
in parallel.
Anybody has any idea?
