Hi,

did you try to get the HSF driver to work without the Riptide driver? Unlike
HCF Riptide modems, the HSF type does not require the Riptide driver to be
active to operate.

Also, did you manually enter /dev/ttySHSF0 for the device in the network
configuration?

Subject: [hsflinux] HSF softmodem driver installation problems

Hello,

I just started trying to install the Linux drivers for the Conexant
modem/soundcard. I have a HP Pavilion (Pentium III , 686) running
a newly installed RedHat 9 distribution (2.4.20-8). The device
reported a vendor ID of 127A and a device ID of 4311 as
expected. The downloads were:

                  hsfmodem-6.03.00lnxt03091800_k2.4.20_8-1rh.686.rpm
                  riptide-0.6lnxbeta03091200_k2.4.20_8-1rh.686.rpm

I'm somewhat new to Linux. I hope that's enough info to describe
my setup.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------

Both installations (HSFmodem driver first , then the Riptide driver)
went relatively smoothly. Both produced the following:

Pre-built ---- modules that seem compatible with your system
        were found under:

                   /usr/lib/---/modules/binaries/i686/rh/linux-2.4.20-8

I ignored these messages and installed the new drivers:

The HSFmodem driver installation gave the following on the
first attempt:

             error: HSF driver not active
             error: %post (HSFmodem {version})
             scriplet failed exit status 1.

The second attempt (i.e, after reboot) did not give that error.

-------------------------------------------------------

No matter what I tried, however, the RedHat 9 network configuration
wizard could not find the modem. This led me to the HSFmodem FAQ,
questions 3 and 4. ttySHSF0 did show up on a file search (it was listed
under /dev, as it should). I've included /etc/modules.conf, the modprobe
output and the dmesg output below. Note that modprobe has some errors.

--------------------------------------------------------------------
/etc/modules.conf
[...]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
modprobe output:
[...]
-----------------------------------------------------------
dmesg output:
[...]
---------------------------------------------------------------------
If anyone wants /var/log/messages I'll send that separately. The
last line of dmesq would lead me to believe the modem is recognized!?
 >From FAQ question 3 I did delete and recreate the symbolic link.

Can anyone help me get at least the modem driver working ?

Thanks,

Bob Olbrich
