Hi, I have a 2800 as well with the same modem. You might want to try a
different dialer, say wvdial through the command line.  This might
make things easier to debug; or at least, offer alternative
error messages.

I am using Gentoo w/ linux-2.4.18 and "chat" as the dialing agent.
