Don't know how you are bringing up pppd at the moment, but try kppp
until you're familiar with Linux. You can choose your authentication
(PAP/CHAP) and other things with kppp (is from KDE, but runs fine under
Gnome.)
Also, it has beautiful logs, which will keep you up to date with your
'phone bills, if you configure your cost-table correctly :)
