[hsflinux] Driver won't detect modem

I'm afraid I'm having the ever-popular "ERROR: no device detected by hsf
driver" problem--
the driver compiles and the modules load, but claim that the modem is not
there.  I've verified 
that the modem is there, that the device ID matches one of the ones
identified in the driver's 
README file as belonging to a supported modem, and that I have the latest
version of the 
driver.  I had to use the errno patch to get the driver to compile and
load, but have not applied 
any other patches.

When I (unintentionally) rebooted my machine with the driver in place, I
received the
following error during startup:

My system is running Gentoo 2005.0 (AMD 64 version), kernel version 2.6.11,
and the
modem is an AOpen model which identifies itself to lspci as "Conexant HSF
56k HSFi 
Modem (rev 01)" or "Class 0780: 14f1:2f00 (rev 01)".  The driver file I'm
using is
hsfmodem-7.18.00.05x86_64full.tar.gz and the patch file I applied is
hsf-7.18.00.05-errno.patch .  Please help.
