[hsflinux] hsfmodem doesn't respond on Debian with Linux 2.6.14

Hello.
A few months back I had successfully installed hsfmodem on an IBM T42 Thinkpad and it worked well with Debian's 2.6.12 kernel after purchasing a license key. A month or so ago I updated the kernel to Debian's 2.6.14 to experiment with a newer version of Madwifi and the version of hsfmodem I had at that time failed to build. This weekend I downloaded the 7.18.00.07full .deb and it builds without error.
However, whenever I try to dial with either pppd or kppp dialtone is never heard and kppp returns an error that the modem is not responding and pppd fails with the following log extract:
send (AT^M)
expect (OK)
alarm
Failed
Is there some method of debugging this? I can supply the dumpdiag output if that will be helpful.
Thanks,
- Nate >>
