Last week I decided to install Mandrake 9.1 on my new HP pavilion
ze5354
laptop,
as I had hoped the install went flawlessly with everything
being installed
(except the modem)

I had previously downloaded the
drivers from linuxant so I just browsed to
them and double clicked them and
they installed ok,
I su'd and ran hsfconfig and took all the default options
offered.

Into kppp and Im browsing,,,, sweet as honey,,,
as you can
Imagine I was well pleased to be online with my new linux laptop.
it didnt
last, being a relative noob and spurred on by the modem success, I
went
wandering saying what happens if I do this and whats this for.

Anyway I
found myself in the KDE kernel configuration module and was looking
around
as
I thought this was showing me the config of the kernel,, how
interesting
(fool) anyway before I knew what was happening it was compiling
(oops)
and it failed.. no surprises there!!
next reboot no linux even in
failsafe,,, ok so I wont do that again!! but
thats how I learn..

so I
went for the reinstall thinking no problems and I'll find out what I
did and
maybe how to fix it when Im online again.
I installed everything as I did
before (99% certain) except this time kppp
says unable to open modem, and
there is no ttySHSF0 or symlink in the /dev
directory.
Im totally lost as
to why it was there and working perfectly before with the
same config but not
this time.

I have tried all the inf files I even tried adding "noapic" to
the lilo.conf
which gave me the files ttySHSF0 and the symlink, but kppp got
the modem
busy message on query.

could anyone shed some light on why
this is happening.
I have read through the archive but any relevant posts
dont seem to have had
it working from the outset.

any ideas or even
comments on how stupid i was are quite welcome.

Attached hsfconfig
--dumpdiag.

Thanks
Scott
