I have the exact same problem under Suse 10.1 but in my case the stubborn module is hsfmc97ati. I haven't found a solution for it apart from not using gmail :) . I was told that the <span id="st" name="st" class="st">HSF</span>
modem driver is not aware of what is happening on the TCP/IP, HTTP, etc... level of communication so it's a strange issue. Anyway at least I know now it's not my ati hardware

It pretends nothing is wrong, so I try to restart it using the init script (I'm on gentoo). I get "ERROR: module hsfpcibasic2 is in use". When I try to rmmod -f the module my terminal hangs.
