[driverloader] Unable to set ESSID

I'm running RH9 with the stock 2.4.20-8 kernel with a
Linksys WPC54G pcmcia adapter.

The adapter shows up via iwconfig (and ifconfig) and I
can set parameters like the encryption key and
nickname via iwconfig.  However, it does not set the
ESSID.  For example, running the command:

iwconfig eth1 essid MyESSID

appears to complete successfully.  However, when I
check the interface using iwconfig, the ESSID is not
set (it just shows double quotes).

Needless to say I am unable to join the network.  Any
suggestions or ideas?
