Todd,
Try '/etc/init.d/hotplug stop' then 'rc-update del hotplug'. Then
try setting up your /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.4 file like this..
#-------begin file---------
#wireless driver
driverloader
#usb drivers (yours may differ depending on your system setup)
usb-uhci
#your USB network drivers
pegasus
#put any additional drivers here
#-------------end file-----------------
Give that a shot....driverloader attempts to set the device up as eth0
but if there are kernel network drivers or network drivers loaded (via
modprobe or otherwise) before driverloader loads it goes out of order,
giving it eth1, eth2, etc.
