if your system use devfs (mandrake 8.1 or 8.2 et al)
the devices are created when used and 'destroyed' when
no (when modules are loaded or unloaded).
it's for this you can see it when you configure the
connection.
try to create a symlink
# ln -s /dev/ttySHCFO /dev/modem
