Hi,
did you try to customize and compile a custom kernel with SuSE?
If that doesn't work, I suggest trying the ACPI patches with a generic
kernel from ftp.kernel.org. You can find the patches on this site:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/acpi/
Also, you can send us the file generated by the command
"hsfconfig --dumpdiag". This might provide extra hints on what is causing
your crashes.

Subject: [hsflinux] logging onto internet froze my computer
I had WinXP Pro and Netzero. There were a few times I would get online for
hours on end, others the issue would present itself seconds after logging
on. The issue was I would log onto the internet, and shortly thereafter the
computer would freeze up (Mouse frozen, system tray clock worked, web
page would not continue to load, could not use keyboard, and had to use
power button to restart the computer). It was so frequent that I tried
reformatting and reinstalling and it seems that this amplified the problem.
Everytime after logging onto the network, between 5 and 60 seconds later,
the computer would freeze like before. I tossed WinXP aside and switched to
Mandrake Linux. I have never had a problem getting online with it at all
ever (for the last six months) and have managed to stay online for however
long I wanted. I thought that maybe Linux was good to me so I gave SUSE
Linux 8.2 a try and low and behold, I had the same thing happen as I did
with WinXP. I would like to try other distobutions of Linux, but a
possbility of no internet holds me back. What could be making this happen,
and how do I go about fixing it in any operating system?
Modem is:
PCI ID 14F1:2F00, Subsystem ID 2002:14F1
Modem Driver's used:
WinXP Pro: OS installed driver however same thing happened with driver's
from the Conexant's install CD 'Generic Soft56K'
Mandrake: 'hsflinmodem-5.03.27lnxtbeta03042700k2.4.21_0.13mdk-1mdk.i586.rpm'
Suse: OS installed driver however same thing happened with driver's from the
Conexant install CD for generic compiling version 4.03ish
I downloaded and installed the latest drivers from Conexant and Linuxant for
each OS when they were installed. I also have updated WinXP to SP1,
Mandrake and SUSE with the latest updates with a friends broadband
connection. I made sure there were not conflicts in IRQs when in WinXP (I
don not know how in the other's), I ran through the troubleshooting guide
thoroughly in WinXP.
As an additional side note, one of the FAQs states: "The modem disconnects
or the system crashes as soon as or shortly after I start the graphical
desktop (X, GNOME, KDE, etc..) or use the sound card. Some users have
reported conflicts between certain sound card drivers, (especially AC97
devices) and our modem drivers. Most graphical desktops access sound devices
when starting up. We are investigating these problems and are hoping to
find solutions soon. Meanwhile, we recommend disabling any conflicting
modules while you use the modem. If you experience a conflict, please report
it." I have a VIA Technologies|VT82C686 [Apollo Super AC97/Audio] onboard
sould card which whenever I install an OS, I disable because I have a Sound
Blaster audio card I use.
I lean more towards the last audio driver conflict unless you have other
suggestions not in the WinXP troubleshooter. I thank you for your time.
(Sorry for the novel)
