[hsflinux] Invalid module format for 2.6.5-gentoo-r1

I have a US Robotics 56K PCI Faxmodem 5660A, and want to get it working
with my 2.6.5 kernel. I'm running Gentoo, and am having incredible
trouble getting this to work. This is my fifth try using different
methods, and it's the farthest I've gotten ->

I downloaded hsfmodem-6.03.00lnxt04061800full.tar.gz, installed, and
ran hsfconfig. It compiled fine, but then this:

Trying to automatically build the driver modules...
(this requires a C compiler and proper kernel sources to be installed)

Where is the linux source build directory that matches your running
kernel?
[/lib/modules/2.6.5-gentoo-r1/build]

WARNING: the kernel version (2.6.5-gentoo) defined in
/lib/modules/2.6.5-gentoo-r1/build/include/linux/version.h
does not match the currently running kernel (2.6.5-gentoo-r1)
The cause of this problem is an incorrect kernel source path.
Please check that /lib/modules/2.6.5-gentoo-r1/build points to the
right tree.
The cause of this is usually a missing or unconfigured
kernel source tree (and sometimes an incorrect directory or symbolic
link).

However, proper /boot/config-2.6.5-gentoo-r1 was found.
Would you like to try using it (in a temporary kernel tree)? [yes]

Building modules for kernel 2.6.5-gentoo, using source directory
/usr/src/linux-2.6.5-gentoo-cnxttmp27167. Please wait...
done.

ERROR: hsf driver not active

Upon running modprobe /dev/ttySHSF, this came out:

Any clues why it would compile invalid modules? Thanks for any help,
Steven Schlansker
