[hsflinux] hsfmodem doesn't respond on Debian with Linux 2.6.14

Okay, thanks to Guerreiro's report I installed minicom and I can use
minicom to talk to the modem device. I find that when minicom is
running, kppp can now find the modem and issue its ATZ string which
shows in minicom and then seems to hang while displaying "Initializing
modem".
Using the pppd scripts with minicom running allows chat to send the
dial string (I'm not near a landline so this experiment will need to
wait until tomorrow).
When I shut minicom down, the previous behavior returns--kppp
immediately says "modem not responding" and pppd/chat times out. In
each case it appears the apps never see the OK response from the modem
device.
I don't think this is a kppp or pppd/chat problem as these apps both
work with a PCMCIA modem. Both apps worked here with hsfmodem about
six weeks ago with a Debian 2.6.12 kernel on the same hardware.
